Making your house really feel like a home can be difficult, but there are a few simple tricks that can make this season a little more merry. Here are a few tips for your family as you prepare to spend the holidays in your new home:

• Spend time decorating together. One of the things that can make you feel weird about your new place is not knowing quite where everything should fit. That's why moving in during the holidays poses an advantage! Set aside time with your family to decorate the house with holiday goods just the way you want to see it. Put up the tree, hang garlands and wreaths, and your house will feel much more familiar.
• Scent matters. After you're done moving in, you've probably kicked up old dust from all the moving furniture. There's also a good chance your house doesn't smell like home yet. Take the time to bake a batch of cookies or light a scented candle here and there. Pick out the scents you really love. After all, scent is the sense with the strongest ties to memory, so choosing the right smells will give you all the warm fuzzies.
• Break the habit of dump zones. One thing that comes with holiday decorating is the inevitable cleanup after the season is over. Do yourself a favor now and figure out where you'll be storing your decorations after you're done using them. Do your best to avoid "dump zones" like the spare room or the garage where you know clutter will continue to pile up over time.
