Why Central Florida is the Leading Hub for Space Exploration

Though there was a good deal of concern about the future of the space program when NASA’s shuttle program ended in 2011, the Space Coast is currently a bustling hub for space exploration, with a number of launches occurring each month right in our backyards. After the introduction of SpaceX, many other small space exploration companies have set up shop on the Space Coast, testing and launching rockets in various locations across the region.
Since the 1950s, NASA has established the Cape as its preferred launch site. Millions of people travel to the area each year to view some of the most spectacular rocket launches in the world. But why is the Space Coast such a desirable area for the space race?
-Our proximity to the Atlantic Ocean is a huge factor. If there is any issue during launch, operators can safely guide the rocket to land in the ocean without endangering any people or buildings. This also allows components from other stages of the launch to safely land in the ocean, as well.
-Florida’s proximity to the equator actually helps add speed to launches. The earth’s rotational speed is highest near the equator, meaning that rockets launched from this area can take advantage of that speed to reach their destination.
-With old launch structures still standing, there is plenty of opportunity to repurpose these buildings for new endeavors.
