History

Evidence of the presence of Paleo-Indians were uncovered in Melbourne starting in 1920.  A number of human and animal bones, charcoal, and a hand honed spear point are among some of the finds.

After the Civil War, pioneer families arrived, and Melbourne was founded in 1867.  The city was given its name after its postmaster who had spent much of his life in Melbourne, Australia. The town had a population of 70 people by 1885. In 1942 the Naval Air Station was established as a training site for newly commissioned Navy and Marine pilots for World War II. That land that occupied the Naval Air Station is now where the Melbourne International Airport sits. Since the 1950s, Melbourne’s growth has been influenced by the space complex at Cape Canaveral and associated aerospace industries.  Eau Gallie, once its own city, merged with Melbourne in 1969.
