History

The Ais people, attracted by the freshwater springs of Turkey Creek and the Indian River, are thought to have been the first inhabitants of the area.  The city’s name seemed to have changed several times over the years being called Turkey Creek, Elbow Creek, and Crane Creek.

An early settler, John Tillman, arrived in the 1880s, constructed a wharf and began a banana grove and orange groves.  With the wharf in place, Palm Bay became a steamboat stop and attracted other settlers. Growth was slack until the arrival of the railroad in 1894. The town was renamed Tillman after the prominent settler.

The city was renamed Palm Bay in the 1920s and became incorporated in January of 1960. In the next 30 years, the city would have a fire station, its first bank, library and hospital.  In 2014, Harris Corporation, now known as L3Harris, opened up a $130 million dollar Technology Center on Palm Bay Road.
