History

Rockledge was founded on August 7, 1887. The citrus trade played a major role in the economic beginnings of Rockledge as well as the lodging industry providing accommodations for tourists visiting Brevard County for its well know wildlife, hunting and fishing as well as for those traveling south on the intercoastal waterway. Known as a resort town, one such destination was the Indian River Hotel with 400 rooms and the three story Plaza Hotel. These hotels were in existence long before the railroad extended southward.  Transportation was provided by the Indian River Steamboat Company, the area’s only mode of long distance transportation.
